“so, what are you gonna do next?”

“The world is clearly not perfect! And you lost hope because of that. But to regain, to rekindle that hope, you chose to seek out artists, who are most energetically tracing paths and putting up signposts towards the perfect world we all want to live in”. - Kit Baker, a wise friend

so, what are you gonna do next? is a research-based performance project, interview series, and journey conducted across the United States from August 1st, 2021-March 1st 2022.

Have you ever found yourself confronted with, or even worse, uttering such dreaded phrases as “so what are you gonna do next?”, “what’s next for you?”, “what do you plan to do with that?”. O’Malley detests artists having to grapple with such close-minded questions. (Especially amid a global pandemic.) Emerging Artists deserve support. Not “hustle culture” questions.

O’Malley collected stories across the country to showcase how emerging artists have been coping over the course of the pandemic. Through a series of interviews “so what are you gonna do next?” they sought to give artists the time and space to openly and honestly discuss their work, hopes, failures, successes, and what they wish you’d ask instead.

How have artists been coping when isolated from their fields? their communities? their collaborators? their resources?

How have artists' relationship to “work” and “art” changed over the course of this isolation?

And as they emerge from this isolation — What do artists need from one another? from the elders and patrons of their respective fields? What do they wish you knew? What do they wish they could change? How are they moving forward? And most importantly--How can you support them?

O’Malley is now home in Baltimore, MD and hard at work to bring these artists words to you!
